We have a lot of plans in the works for upcoming education programs, but for the moment here are some introductory facts on Africa and Malawi.

Africa
900 million = Population of the continent, 14% of world total.

AIDS = Most common cause of death.

6300 = Number of Africans that die of AIDS every day.

8500 = Number of Africans that are infected with the HIV virus every day, 1400 of these are newborn babies.

11million = Number of AIDS orphans in Africa. If nothing is done, there will be 20 million be the 2010.

$540 billion = Amount Africa received in loans between 1970 and 2002. Over that same period, African countries paid back $550 billion - $10 billion more than the original loans. At the end of 2002, they still owed another $293 billion.

6 = Percentage of world trade shared by Africa in 1980. By 2002, this had dropped to just 2% despite the fact that Africa has 14% of the world's population.

$70 billion = Amount in exports that could be earned if Africa's share of global trade rose just 1%. This is several times more than what the region currently receives in foreign aid.

Malawi
296 million = US Population.
13 million = Malawi Population

$44,389 = Average annual family income in the US. Average annual family income in Malawi = $170 (less than $0.50 a day).

65 = Percentage of GDP that the US owes to its creditors. Percentage of GDP that Malawi owes to its creditors = 223.8.

6.5 / 1,000 (0.65%) = Number of deaths per live births (Infant mortality rate) in the US. Infant mortality rate in Malawi = 103.32 / 1,000 (10.332%).

0.6% = HIV/AIDS rate in the US. HIV/AIDS rate in Malawi = 14.2%.

77.71 years = Average life expectancy in the US. Average life expectancy in Malawi = 36.97 years.

78 = Percentage of Americans that consider themselves to be Christian. Percentage of Malawians that consider themselves to be Christian = 80.

Balaka
200,000 = Population

64 = Percentage of Balaka's population under the age of 25

77 = Percentage of Balaka's population under the age of 35

126 = Number of teachers in Balaka

21 = Number of qualified teachers in Balaka

3 = Percentage of population with access to electricity

41 = Percentage of population with access to safe drinking water (only 6% have access to taps in dwelling units)

21,678 = Cases of diahrrea in 2000 (up from 13,750 in 1999 and 8,469 in 1998) Diarrhea, with cholera, can be prevented by drinking safe water and properly disposing of waste during the wet season.

1 in 4 = Amount of Balaka residents that are living with HIV/AIDS.

50 = Percentage of Balaka Hospital's budget that is used to transport those who have died back to their families.
