The Kids of Kaumphawi
he village of Kaumphawi (cow-oom-pow-ee) is a small one on the outskirts of Balaka town, where Mrs. Malunga has served orphaned children since 1997. She was originally approached by a small Malawian nonprofit, asking if she’d be willing to volunteer as an orphan caretaker while the children’s guardians were at work. She has dedicated herself wholeheartedly to this role, but the financial support she was promised, has never arrived.

This organization’s staff visits the village regularly, measuring the shoe sizes of the children, with promises that shoes are on their way. They never come. They take down their clothing sizes–clothes yet to be seen. And they repeatedly promise to pay the school fees of multiple orphaned children. Promises they never fulfill.

The majority of the new secondary school students Bola Moyo is sponsoring come from this village. These kids have had their hopes up for some time, while this small organization continually diverts its funds from this village into other projects, and ultimately into the pockets of a few corrupt leaders.

In the summer, when we promised to pay the school fees for these children, Mrs. Malunga was wary. Would we fulfill this promise - or would she again have to tell the community that the funds were not available. To her delight, Dustin will be personally accompanying about eight children from Kaumphawi to the schools to meet the headmasters and pay the their fees. We are also sponsoring kids in a neighboring area.

We are so pleased to be part of this; to finish what has been left undone! And we are happy that many of you have given so that we might help these kids. We cannot thank you enough!
